Ashiko

Ashikos are a conical drums originating from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. The word ashiko means “freedom”. They were traditionally carved from one log or made from many strips of wood banded together. Animal skins were then stretched over top and held in place with tacks or pegs of wood. The ashiko was introduced to America in the early 1930s. Here it has taken off in many different directions, from a hippie kids in a drum circle to professional recording artists. It is a very versatile instrument.
